Frequently Asked Questions
All your meals will be provided during your stay and you’ll eat in the student dining rooms, cafés or restaurants. Your summer school co-ordinator will write to you to ask if you have any special dietary requirements, (eg Halal, vegetarian, dairy-free, gluten free...)
Everything is free, including sports and social activities, accommodation, food and transport. However you'll probably want to bring some spending money with you for extra drinks, snacks, phone calls, games of pool etc...
Each summer school has a team of organisers and student helpers who are there to make sure you enjoy your stay. They will be in touch with you before you arrive and will be around to answer any questions you might have during your stay.
By far the best reports from previous summer school students come from those who came on their own and made new friends. But in case you’re worried about this, just like when you start university or college for real, there’ll be a lot of people around to look out for you and make sure you don’t feel left out.
If you do know others who are applying to attend the same summer school as you, and you’d like to be placed together, please let us know by writing their names on your application form. We try to keep small groups of two or three friends together whenever we can.
Of course! There are pay/card phones you can use or you can bring a mobile. If you bring a mobile you must turn it off during classes, lectures and workshops !
Not much really. Clothes, toiletries, towel, pens, paper and a little spending money. Once you have applied and been accepted onto a summer school, you’ll be sent further information about what to bring. As well as casual clothes, you might need sports gear, a waterproof coat (just in case!) and maybe something smarter, as most spring schools have a special party or dinner on the last night.
Don’t worry. Talk to one of the student helpers or staff – they really want to help you enjoy your summer school as much as possible. Try to give it at least a day or two, as you may find it a bit strange before you settle in.
Going to one of the summer schools described on this website is a way of getting a real idea of what it's like at university, and gives you the chance to decide whether it would be the right thing for you.
Summer Schools are run for Year 10 pupils from all over the North-West. They are ideal for you if you are not sure if higher education is for you or if you are the first person in your family to consider going to university.
Students with disabilities are welcome on the summer schools. If you have any special needs please write them on your application form. You are the expert on your particular need so your summer school co-ordinator will probably phone and talk to you before you arrive.
If you need information provided in large print, on coloured paper or electronically - just tell us! Likewise, if you need to stay in a room with special adaptations we can make sure wherever possible we meet your needs. The more information we have in advance, the better we can support you during the summer school.
Coming along to a summer school will be particularly useful if you don't know anyone who has been to university that you could ask for advice on what it's like and how to choose what to study.
