How to Apply for Summer School
How to Apply for Summer School

HOW DO I APPLY?

Before you apply
Read the information on this website carefully and look at the descriptions of the summer schools in the 'Find a Summer School' pages and write down your top three summer
schools.

The number of places available is given in the entry for each summer school.
As you can see, some have only around 25 places and others have over 100 places.
Please select at least one of the larger summer schools as there is fierce competition for places at some of the smaller summer schools.

Check the dates and make sure they don’t clash with family holidays. Make sure your parents know about these dates so they don’t book holidays during these times.

Check the dates with your teachers too. You may find you have exams, work experience or class visits which clash if the summer school is in term-time.

Your teacher will tell you the closing date for handing in your application form. Places are limited and it is never possible to allocate all pupils to their first choice.
Do not be disappointed if this happens because nearly everyone who attended a
summer school (whether it was their first, second or third choice) says it was brilliant, wherever they have been!

WHEN YOU GET THE BROCHURE -

STEP 1
Carefully complete the application form at the back of the brochure (or download the application form from this website). Make sure you answer every question.

STEP 2
Check with your parents (or carers) that you are able to be away from home for the whole of the summer school. Ask them to complete and sign Section 2 of the application form.

STEP 3
Check with your teacher that you are able to be away from school for the whole of the summer school, and that it doesn’t clash with any school activity.

STEP 4
Hand the completed form to your teacher who will fill in Section 3, write a reference for you, and send the form off to the summer school office at the Regional Summer Schools Office at Lancaster University.

Deadline for applications
Your teacher will tell you the deadline for applications. We expect many more applications than there are places so it is important that you get the forms to your teacher in plenty of time. The deadline for teachers to get the completed application to the Regional Summer Schools Office is Thursday 1st May 2008.

What happens next?

Once you have been given a place, a summer school co-ordinator from your chosen university will be in touch to welcome you and ask you and your parents to sign consent forms. Closer to the starting date, the co-ordinator will also contact you to discuss your travel arrangements. If you do have any other concerns or questions, do contact your co-ordinator – their details will be on all the correspondence you receive from the regional office and the university.

If you tell us have a special need, disability, health condition or have specific religious or cultural needs then your summer school co-ordinator will be in touch to discuss these and make any arrangements that are necessary.

Good luck with your summer school application!
